The tagline of this movie is “where there are gods, there are monsters”, I’m not sure who is responsible for that nonsensical phrase, but not only does it not make sense, the movie did not feature any gods or sea creatures. Okay fine, there was one, single sea monster but we only saw it’s rather large mouth filled with teeth, the stomach contents, and that’s about it. So apart from a ridiculous tagline, the title of the movie is also very misleading.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, I was severely underwhelmed by this film. It seemed like they were trying to combine a modern teen flick with ancient Greek mythology and it failed, miserably. The plot was disjointed, the main character, Percy did not seem like the all inspiring hero and as I mentioned before there was no sea of monsters.
I do however think that the actors were well cast and they did their best with the lackluster script. It seems to me that they are trying to re-create the appeal of the Harry Potter films: a group of three friends, two males: one hero and one side kick and one female who is also extremely smart and takes the role of strategist. However. that’s as far as the similarities go I’m afraid.
In conclusion, I’d say this is a family friendly film to catch with your kids but definitely not worth the trip to the cinema for the adults.
Doesn’t this poster scream Hermoine & Harry to you?
